When a Beautiful Bar Door Turns Risky: Vertical Lift Up Hinges for Fold-Up Designs

Homeowner from New Brunswick, NJ

When I finished building my new outdoor bar, the fold-up door was supposed to be the highlight — 36" wide, 20" H, solid wood with a clean, modern finish. But once it was installed, I realized how heavy it was — close to 50 lbs — and the wind made it close unpredictably. On breezy afternoons, it slammed shut, turning my beautiful bar into a safety hazard. I started worrying about friends standing nearby or my kids getting their fingers caught. What I needed was some hardware that could hold the door safely when open, and when it lowers, provide some assistance to control its speed and prevent any sudden or dangerous drop.

Suggested Product for Vertical Lift Up Hinges

We recommended 2 hinges K51M-400-HA-US19 (black) — a hydraulic 304 stainless steel hinge. This hinge model in particular doesn’t provide any self-closing or soft-closing in nature. The “H” represents a hydraulic system and “A” represents a swing speed adjustment. It is simply a hinge model that solely slows down the door swing.

The Homeowner's Feedback

“Yeah, so it does work in a vertical position, just a little differently. Like, I know your door’s hinges force-close the door off and also make them slow-close — these hinges work in vertical where it won’t swing and flame-shot, and you could also… it’ll keep weight open where it just won’t flop down.”
