What is a 90 degree hinge?
A 90 degree hinge is engineered to stop or hold a door at a precise right angle. Unlike standard butt hinges, it integrates a built-in stop or hold-open function to secure the door at 90°. Waterson designs concealed 90 degree hinges and 90 degree hinge heavy duty models tested for 150–440 lbs, ideal for professional-grade projects.
How to install 90 degree hinges?
Waterson 90 degree door hinges install like standard mortise hinges, but with integrated stop or hold-open mechanisms.
For the tooling, you need to prepare:
- 5 mm hex wrench – for the Hold-Open Control Nut
- 3 mm hex wrench – for the lock-in screws
Here is the step-by-step:
- Locate the SB hinge bottom – Hold-open adjustment is only done at the bottom of the SB hinge.
- Loosen the lock-in screws – Use the 3 mm hex to slightly release the lock so you can make adjustments.
- Adjust the hold-open – Insert the 5 mm hex into the control nut:
- Turn toward “–” to enable hold-open at 90°.
- Turn toward “+” to disable hold-open.
4. Test the door – Swing it to 90° and check if it holds (enabled) or swings freely (disabled). Repeat in small increments if needed.
5. Re-lock the setting – Tighten the lock-in screws again with the 3 mm hex to secure your adjustment.
Notes:
- Adjustment works only on SB hinges and only at the bottom.
- Use small turns — a quarter turn at a time is best.
- After adjustment, check your closing speed so the door still latches properly.

How to make a hinge stop at 90 degrees?
Two methods are common:
- Built-in hold-open hinges that secure the door at 90°.
- Mechanical door stops mounted on the floor or wall.
Waterson’s soft close 90 degree hinge combines both functions: controlled closing plus precise 90 degree door stop. No extra hardware needed.
