Soft Closing Residential Screen Door Hinges

If you have pets, young children, or live somewhere with mosquitoes and insects, you already know the problem. Someone leaves through the screen door, the door swings open, and stays open. The dog gets out. The bugs get in. You yell at everyone to close the door behind them.

Waterson soft closing screen door hinges use a spring-hydraulic system that closes the door fully and latches it, without slamming. The hydraulic damping slows the door in the final few degrees before it closes, so you get a quiet, controlled close every time — not the loud bang that drives everyone in the house crazy.

Close with confidence. Every cycle counts.

Who self closing screen door hinges are built for

Pet owners
Dogs and cats push through screen doors with more force than a person. Standard spring hinges lose tension over time and stop closing reliably. Waterson hinges have adjustable tension — set it once to match your door, and it stays there.

Families with young children
Kids leave doors open. A self closing hinge means the screen door closes automatically every time, keeping insects out and children safely inside without anyone having to remember.

Homes with insect pressure
A screen door that does not close reliably is not doing its job. Waterson hinges close and latch every single time, sealing the opening completely.

Anyone tired of door slamming
Cheap spring hinges snap the door shut loudly, wearing down the frame and latch over time. Waterson hydraulic models slow the final motion so the door closes firmly and quietly, every time.

Which Soft Closing Screen Door Hinges do You Need?

Hydraulic soft-closing (B-series)

Spring force combined with hydraulic damping. The door closes fully on its own, but slows down in the final motion before latching. No slamming. Two independent adjustments: closing force and closing speed.

Best for: households with pets or children, high-traffic screen doors, anyone who wants the door to close quietly without banging the frame. This is the model most residential customers choose.

Soft-closing with hold-open (D-series)

Same hydraulic soft-close, but the hinge also locks at 90 degrees when you open the door fully. Useful when you are carrying things in and out and need the door to stay open temporarily, then close on its own when you are done.

Best for: back doors to patios or decks, kitchen screen doors used during cooking and entertaining.

Why Waterson is different from standard screen door hinges

Waterson’s screen door hinges are engineered for high-cycle, lightweight doors that demand reliability, quiet operation, and long service life. Designed with a full-mortise butt hinge profile, they deliver the durability professionals expect while maintaining a clean, minimal appearance.

  • Self Closing: Built-in spring tension ensures consistent automatic closure—no need for overhead closers.
  • Soft Closing Hydraulic: Prevents slamming, protecting frames and reducing noise in residential and commercial spaces.
  • Heavy Duty: Tested to exceed 1,000,000 cycles, ideal for storefronts, classrooms, and institutional screen doors.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel construction (SS304/316) withstands moisture, temperature changes, and outdoor conditions common in patio or porch applications.
  • Load Support: Three hinges support up to 260 lbs, four hinges up to 330 lbs—ensuring stability for oversized screen doors.
  • ADA Compliance: Adjustable tension design allows low opening force while maintaining reliable closure, supporting accessibility compliance.
  • Aesthetic Appearance: Flush mortise installation maintains a clean architectural finish, suitable for both residential and commercial projects.
  • Adjustable Tension: Integrated adjusters allow precise fine-tuning of closing speed and force to match project requirements.

How Many Hinges for a Screen Door?

The answer depends on door height and weight:

  • ≤60" or ≤150 lbs – 2 hinges
  • 60–90" or 150–330 lbs – 3 hinges
  • 90–120" or 260–440 lbs – 4 hinges

Knowing how many door hinges per door ensures proper alignment, balanced load distribution, and UL-listed fire or safety compliance.

How to Install Screen Door Hinges

Waterson self closing screen door hinges follow standard full-mortise butt hinge installation. The difference is in precision adjustment:

  1. Replace the middle hinge with the non-mechanism hinge using provided screws.
  2. Set the top hinge at “0” before mounting.
  3. Install bottom hinge and begin adjustment at setting #3.
  4. Test closing force at 20°, 60°, and 90° swing.
  5. Balance top and bottom hinges by alternately tightening set screws.
  6. Final check at 20°, 60°, and 90° to confirm smooth closure and latch.

With built-in self-closing and tool-free tension tuning, Waterson eliminates the need for overhead closers while reducing callbacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these work on my existing screen door?

Waterson hinges start at 4"x4", which is larger than the small spring hinges found on most lightweight residential screen doors. If your current screen door uses 3.5" or smaller hinges, the hinge mortise will need to be enlarged. For standard exterior screen and storm doors with 4" hinges already installed, Waterson is a direct replacement. If you are unsure, measure your existing hinge leaf before ordering.

Will the door still close if my pet pushes through it hard?

Yes. The spring tension is strong enough to return the door to closed after an animal pushes through. You can adjust the closing force using the numbered tension panel to make sure it is strong enough for your door weight and your pet's size. Hydraulic models also prevent the door from bouncing back open after closing, which is a common issue with spring-only hinges.

Can I adjust how fast the door closes?

On the hydraulic B and D series, yes. There are two independent adjustments: one for spring tension (closing force) and one for hydraulic speed (closing speed). You can set the door to close slowly and quietly, or faster if needed. On the mechanical A series, closing speed is set by the spring tension — there is no separate speed control.

Will this stop my screen door from slamming?

Yes, if you choose the hydraulic B or D series. The hydraulic damper slows the door in the final degrees before it latches, preventing the loud slam that standard spring hinges cause. The mechanical A series closes firmly but does not have hydraulic damping, so it will close with more force at the end.

How is this different from a screen door closer?

A traditional screen door closer is a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder mounted above the door with a visible arm connecting to the frame. It is a separate piece of hardware added on top of your existing hinges. Waterson hinges integrate the self-closing mechanism into the hinge itself, so there is no extra hardware, no visible arm, and nothing mounted above the door. The door looks clean and operates smoothly without any add-ons.
