How to Install Concealed Door Hinges Without Visible Hardware
A concealed door hinge does one thing a standard hinge cannot: it disappears. No arm, no rail, no closer body mounted on the frame. Just a clean door that closes itself every time.
This guide covers exactly how to install Waterson concealed closer hinges, what comes in the box, and what each hinge does, so your door performs correctly from the first close.

What Makes Waterson a Concealed Door Hinge System?
Most concealed door closers require hollowing out the door body or frame to hide the mechanism. Waterson takes a different approach. The self-closing mechanism lives inside the hinge barrel itself, sitting flush at the door edge just like a standard mortise hinge.
When the door is closed, you see nothing on the pull side. No overhead closer, no pivot arm, no exposed hardware. The hinge barrel sits at the edge of the door, fully recessed, and invisible from the room.
This is what makes Waterson a true concealed solution without the costly machining that traditional concealed closers require.
What Comes in the Box
Each Waterson set includes everything needed for installation:
-
Waterson hinges (2 or 3 hinges depending on door weight)
-
3mm hex wrench
-
5mm hex wrench
-
Cross head self-tapping screws (#12 x 1-1/4")
-
Flat head machine screws (#12-24 UNC 1/2")
-
Spreader bar (props the hinge leafs open for easier installation)
-
Fire-rated stainless steel shims

Step-by-Step on How to Install Waterson Concealed Door Hinges
Step 1: Choose your hinge set
Waterson hinge sets are configured by function. Pick the right one before ordering:
|
Set |
Configuration |
Function |
|
Set A |
SA.SA.SA1 |
Self-closing, mechanical speed control, no hold open |
|
Set B |
DS.HA.SA |
Self-closing, hydraulic speed control, no hold open |
|
Set C |
SB.SA.SA1 |
Self-closing, mechanical speed control, with hold open |
|
Set D |
DS.HA.SB |
Self-closing, hydraulic speed control, with hold open |
If your door needs to stay open at 90 degrees, choose Set C or D. If you only need self-closing with speed control, Set A or B is sufficient.
Step 2: Mark hinge positions on the door and frame
Standard positioning for a 3-hinge set:
-
Top hinge: 5 inches from top of door
-
Bottom hinge: 10 inches from bottom of door
-
Middle hinge: centered between top and bottom
Use a pencil to trace around the hinge leaf on both the door edge and the frame.

Step 3: Cut the mortise
Route or chisel the mortise on the door edge and frame to the depth of the hinge leaf. The hinge pin must sit flush with the door edge when installed. Do not recess deeper than the leaf thickness or the door will bind.
Note: Waterson uses a standard hinge template, so no additional machining or hollowing of the door body is required. This is a key difference from traditional mortised concealed closers.

Step 4: Use the spreader bar
Before screwing the hinge in place, use the included spreader bar to prop the hinge leafs open. This gives you clear access to the screw holes and keeps the barrel aligned during installation.

Step 5: Install the hinges
Secure each hinge with the included screws. Use flat head machine screws for the door leaf and self-tapping screws for the frame leaf. Install in the order labeled on each hinge: top first, then middle, then bottom.
Note: Hinge positions are interchangeable, but for optimal performance install them per the sticker labels on each hinge.
Step 6: Hang the door and check swing
Once all hinges are installed, hang the door and confirm it swings freely without binding. At this stage all hinges should be in the factory (N) setting, meaning spring tension is disengaged.
How to Adjust After Installation
Waterson hinges ship in the (N) factory setting with tension disengaged. You need to set tension before the door will self-close.
Step 1: Set spring tension (S)
Use the 5mm hex wrench on the numerical tension panel. Increase tension one number at a time starting from N, then 0, 1, 2, and up. Stop when the door closes and latches cleanly from 20 degrees. Do not jump settings. Going directly from N to 7 will break the hinge and void the warranty. Setting tension beyond 5 may decrease spring longevity.
Step 2: Adjust swing speed (A)
Use the 5mm wrench on the SA hinge. Turn (+) for faster, turn (-) for slower. Adjust gradually in small increments. Lock the speed lock-in screws with the 3mm wrench once satisfied.
Step 3: Adjust latch speed (A1)
Use the 5mm wrench on the SA1 hinge. Always adjust swing speed first, then latch speed. This sequence prevents slamming at the final close.
Step 4: Lock in place
Tighten the speed lock-in screws on SA and SA1 hinges using the 3mm wrench. Each hinge has two lock-in screws. Tighten at least one per hinge.
Why Waterson Concealed Door Hinges Work Without Visible Hardware
Removing the overhead closer is the goal. Here is how Waterson makes that possible without compromising function:
-
Self-Closing Built Into the Hinge Barrel: The spring and hydraulic mechanism is housed inside the barrel, not mounted on the surface. No closer body, no arm, nothing visible on the door face.
-
Soft Closing: Oil-controlled hydraulic braking absorbs the closing motion and prevents slamming, no external damper needed.
-
Separate Swing and Latch Speed Control: Two independent adjustment points give you precise control over the full closing arc and the final latch pull, without touching the spring tension.
-
Hold Open Option: Sets C and D include an SB hinge that holds the door open at 90 degrees, controlled by a hex nut on the barrel. No floor stop, no overhead hold-open arm required.
-
ADA Compliant: Adjustable to meet ADA and ICC A117.1 standards, 5 lbs opening force and 5-second closing speed from 90 to 12 degrees.
-
UL 3-Hour Fire Rated: Compatible with fire-rated doors up to 3 hours, including 3/4 HR doors that most traditional concealed closers cannot support.
-
Stainless Steel: Grade 304 or 316 SST for both interior and exterior applications, including coastal and high-humidity environments.
-
No Special Machining: Standard mortise template installation. No door hollowing, no frame routing beyond a standard hinge recess.
-
Warranty: 10 years mechanical, 3 years hydraulic.
Frequently Asked Questions
+ Do I need to remove the door to adjust Waterson hinges after installation?
No. All adjustment points are accessible from the outside of the hinge barrel with the included hex wrenches. The door stays on its hinges throughout the entire adjustment process.
+ Can Waterson hinges replace an existing overhead closer?
Yes. Waterson hinges are a direct replacement for overhead door closer systems. They handle self-closing, speed control, and optional hold open in one hinge set, with no surface-mounted hardware required.
+ What is the maximum door weight Waterson hinges support?
The standard set with 3 Waterson self-closing door hinges supports doors up to 260 lbs. For heavier doors, contact Waterson directly for heavy-duty configurations.
