Left Hand or Right Hand Door? Waterson K51M Hinges Fit Both Sides

Left Hand or Right Hand Door? Waterson K51M Hinges Fit Both Sides

Ordering a hinge for the wrong door swing is one of the most common delays on a commercial job. Waterson K51M full mortise closer hinges are non-handed, so the same hinge installs on left-hand or right-hand doors and can be inverted as needed.

Mechanical models are UL listed for fire-rated doors up to 3 hours, meet ANSI/BHMA A156.17 Grade 1 (1,000,000 cycles), and fit standard A156.7 hinge templates for direct replacement. One SKU covers both swings, so handing errors on site disappear.

Why does door handing matter on a commercial job?

Handing mistakes cost time, not just money. A handed hinge ordered for the wrong swing sits in a box while the opening waits for a reorder, and late swing changes on a hardware schedule are common. A non-handed hinge removes that risk. For a deeper look at the concept, see why non-handed hinges simplify door installations.

Waterson K51M (non-handed) Typical handed hinge
Door swing Fits left-hand and right-hand doors One swing only
SKUs to stock One per size and function Separate RH and LH versions
Late swing changes Same hinge, just invert it Reorder and wait
Order checking No handing column to double-check Handing must be confirmed per door

One caution: not every Waterson product is non-handed. The K51L-SW swing clear hinge has its own RH/LH handing instructions, and the K51WP side mount gate hinge comes in separate RH and LH versions. This article covers the K51M full mortise series only.

Why do specifiers trust the Waterson K51M?

The K51M is backed by third-party standards, not marketing claims. Each point below can be checked against the K51M technical data sheet.

Spec Waterson K51M
Fire rating All-mechanical models UL certified up to 3 hours, NFPA 80 compliant when supplied without the optional hold-open
Durability ANSI/BHMA A156.17 Grade 1, tested to 1,000,000 cycles. A 2024 independent lab report confirmed Grade 1 for the K51M-450 on a 4 x 8 ft, 264.6 lb door hung on four hinges
Template ANSI/BHMA A156.7, so standard door and frame preps work
Material Type 304 stainless standard, Type 316 optional, 316L marine grade as a custom order
Finishes Satin Stainless (BHMA 630), Flat Black (BHMA 631), Dark Satin Bronze (BHMA 695), Satin Brass (BHMA 731, PVD)
Track record Closer hinges since 2011, hundreds of thousands sold worldwide
Warranty Limited warranty of 3 to 5 years, depending on product and conditions of use

Each K51M also combines up to four functions in one part: hinge, closer, hold-open and door stop. That is why it shows up in demanding openings such as courtroom doors that cycle hundreds of times a day.

Which K51M size fits your door?

Match hinge size to door thickness first, then count hinges by door height. All sizes below are non-handed.

1. Hinge size, by door thickness

Hinge size (in) Model BHMA template Door thickness (in)
4 x 4 x 0.130 K51M-400 A40M 1-3/8
4.5 x 4.5 x 0.134 K51M-450 A45M 1-3/4
5 x 5 x 0.146 / 0.190 K51M-500 / K51M-500D A50M / A50B 1-3/4 to 2-1/4
6 x 6 x 0.160 K51M-600 A60M 2-1/4 and up

2. Hinges per set, by door size

Max door size Max weight Hinges per set
4 x 7 ft 260 lbs 3
4 x 8 ft 330 lbs 4

Corners come square, 1/4 in radius or 5/8 in radius to match an existing mortise. Drawings in PDF, DWG and X_T format are on the K51M download page.

Mechanical or Hybrid: which K51M set do you need?

Choose Mechanical for fire doors and exterior openings, Hybrid for quiet interior doors.

Mechanical Hybrid
How it works Torsion springs and disc springs only Adds a small hydraulic reservoir for softer, quieter closing
Location All locations, including exterior Interior only, temperature swings under 20°F (11°C)
Fire-rated doors Set A is the fire door set Set B, only when combined with certified mechanical hinges
Hold-open set Set C, non-fire doors only Set D, non-fire interior doors only

For exterior and wet locations, specify Mechanical with the optional weather-resistant cap, and consider Type 316 stainless near salt air. Our guide to coastal gate hinges covers material choice for those sites.

What are the most common K51M installation mistakes?

Non-handed does not mean position-free. Most field problems come from the order of hinges in a set, not the swing direction.

  • Mixing up Top, Middle and Bottom. Each hinge in a set is labeled for its position, and the mechanism listed first in the configuration usually goes on top. Inverting a hinge changes which adjustment socket sits at the top or bottom of the barrel, so follow the labels.
  • Using hold-open on a fire door. The hold-open function (about 90°, or 85° ±5°) must not be used on fire-rated doors.
  • Putting Hybrid hinges outdoors. Temperature swings affect the hydraulic damping. Use Mechanical outside.
  • Opening past 120°. Swinging beyond 120° can shorten service life and void the warranty. Add a K51M barrel door stop (90° or 120°) where walls or furniture allow overtravel.
  • Skipping the call on unusual doors. Contact Waterson before using K51M on doors over 10 ft tall or large exterior doors exposed to wind gusts, such as rooftops or building corners.

After hanging, adjust spring power, swing speed and latch speed with the hex keys included in each carton. The adjustment manuals cover every configuration.

Can you retrofit K51M on existing doors?

Yes. Because K51M leaves follow the A156.7 template, they replace existing butt hinges of the same size using the same mortise and fasteners. No new prep is needed for most doors.

Where a retrofit makes the most sense:

  • Arched doorways where a surface closer is a poor fit.
  • Pairs of communicating hotel doors.
  • Low-headroom openings with no space above the door.
  • Existing doors that would need reinforcing for an overhead closer.

Compared with a surface closer, a closer hinge also stays out of the path of travel. Our comparison of closer hinges vs typical U.S. hinge and closer setups walks through the trade-offs.

Before ordering a retrofit, confirm:

  • Door thickness
  • Corner radius of the existing mortise
  • Whether the door is fire-rated

For openings that also need more clear width, look at swing clear hinges for ADA doors, and check the RH/LH handing instructions before ordering.

Waterson closer hinges compared with traditional overhead door closers

If your project mixes left-hand and right-hand doors, the K51M lets you specify one hinge family for both. You get a closer, hinge, hold-open and door stop in one part, with UL fire listing, BHMA Grade 1 durability and standard template prep.

Frequently asked questions

Can one Waterson K51M hinge be used on both left-hand and right-hand doors?

Yes. K51M full mortise closer hinges are non-handed, so the same hinge fits left-hand and right-hand doors and can be inverted as needed. What does matter is position: each hinge in a set is labeled Top, Middle or Bottom, and installing them in that order keeps adjustment simple.

Are K51M closer hinges approved for fire-rated doors?

Yes. All-mechanical K51M models are UL certified for fire-rated doors up to 3 hours (UL GVEV.R26997) and comply with NFPA 80. Do not use the hold-open function on fire doors. Hybrid hinges cannot close a fire door on their own, but they can be used in a fire-rated set when combined with certified mechanical hinges.

Can K51M hinges be adjusted to meet ADA requirements?

Yes. Opening force and closing speed are both field adjustable. ADA 2010 Section 404.2.8.1 calls for at least 5 seconds to move from 90° open to 12° from the latch, and Section 404.2.9 limits opening force to 5 lbf on interior hinged doors. Fire doors are exempt from the 5 lbf limit and follow the minimum force allowed by the authority having jurisdiction.

Do K51M hinges need special door or frame preparation?

No. K51M leaves follow ANSI/BHMA A156.7 template dimensions, so standard hinge preps and fasteners work, and they can directly replace existing hinges of the same size. Match the door thickness and the corner radius (square, 1/4 in or 5/8 in). Waterson recommends using a complete Waterson set on each door rather than mixing with ordinary hinges.

Can K51M hinges be used on exterior doors?

Yes, with mechanical models. Hybrid hinges should not be used outdoors or where temperature swings more than 20°F. For wet or exposed locations, specify the optional weather-resistant cap and consider Type 316 stainless steel near salt air. Contact Waterson first for large exterior doors exposed to strong wind or doors over 10 ft tall.
