Powder Coating Waterson Hinges: What You Need to Know

A common question we get from customers is whether Waterson closer hinges can be powder coated or spray painted at their own facility, and whether doing so will damage the hinge. The short answer is yes, it is possible, and done correctly it will not affect the hinge's performance.

Can I powder coat my Waterson hinge myself?

Yes. You can powder coat or spray paint a Waterson hinge at your own facility, and it will not affect how the hinge works. The closing force, hydraulic damping, hold open, and door stop functions all sit inside the sealed barrel, so a finish applied to the outer plates and knuckles never touches them. Coat the hinge as one assembled unit and it will close, hold, and stop exactly as it did before.

Why can't I take the hinge apart to coat it?

Because the closing force is pre set inside the barrel at the factory, and that setting is lost the moment the barrel is opened. Waterson hinges are spring and oil calibrated units, not a stack of loose parts you can reassemble by hand.

Pull the barrel apart to coat the pieces individually and you release the spring tension and break the oil seal, which permanently changes the closing speed and can cause the hinge to leak or stop self closing altogether. If you need to keep coating off a specific area, mask it with tape instead of removing any part.

Which colors can I get straight from Waterson?

Five, so check this list before you coat anything yourself. Flat Black (US19) and Dark Satin Bronze (695) are already factory powder coatings, so if you want black or bronze, Waterson has applied and tested that exact finish on the same stainless steel your hinge is made from. Satin Brass (US4) and Satin Bronze (US10) are applied by physical vapor deposition, which is harder and more wear resistant than anything you can spray on. Satin Stainless Steel (US32D) is the bare stainless finish. If one of these matches your project, you skip the in house coating entirely.

What if I need an exact color that isn't on the list?

Send Waterson the color you need and ask for a custom finish. This is the better route than coating it yourself whenever the color has to match a specific spec, a RAL number, or existing hardware on site, because Waterson applies the finish to the assembled hinge under controlled conditions and confirms the match before it ships. You avoid the two things that go wrong with self coating: overspray creeping into the knuckles, and a hand sprayed finish wearing unevenly on a high cycle door.
