On an ADA opening, two hinges that sit one line apart on a hardware schedule can give you very different inspection results. The whole difference shows up in three numbers you already track: clear width, maneuvering clearance, and opening force. Below is where a standard hinge tends to lose ground on each one, and where a swing clear hinge holds it.

The three numbers to check before you spec

If you want the short version, walk your opening through these three checks in order. If a standard hinge trips any of them, a swing clear hinge is usually the cleaner fix.

  1. Clear width at 90 degrees. Does the door panel stay inside the opening and eat into your 32 inches?
  2. Maneuvering clearance on the push side. Does an added closer body or arm reach into the space the code measures?
  3. Opening force. Can someone still pull the door open under 5 pounds after you make it self-close?

Where does the 32-inch clear width actually go on a standard hinge?

The 2010 ADA Standards, section 404.2.3, ask for a 32-inch minimum clear width, measured from the face of the door to the stop with the door open at 90 degrees. On paper a 36-inch slab passes without a second thought. On a real opening, that margin can close fast.

A standard full-mortise butt hinge pivots the door on a barrel set tight to the jamb. At 90 degrees, the thickness of the panel (usually 1-3/4 inches on a commercial door) is still sitting inside the opening, and the stop plus the frame reveal take another bite. On a fixed 34-inch slab, that combination can land right at, or just under, 32 inches, which leaves almost nothing for installation tolerance.

A swing clear, or offset, hinge uses a cranked leaf that carries the panel out of the opening as it swings. That recovers the door thickness and pushes the clear width back above the minimum on the exact same slab.

One note on hold-open: the K51L-SW line is UL 3-hour fire-rated hardware, but a door required to self-close on a fire-rated assembly should not be left on standing hold-open unless it is paired with a listed automatic-closing release.
